LIVESTRONG Program at the Northwest Mercy Family YMCA
The LIVESTRONG program through the Northwest Arkansas Mercy Family YMCA is a cancer survivor wellness program and the Ozark Affiliate funds breast cancer survivors to participate in the program. The program fulfills the important need of supporting the increasing number of breast cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their “new normal.”
The program is free to breast cancer survivors who have completed treatment and have had a doctor’s referral into the program. The program includes a free 12 week membership to the Northwest Arkansas Mercy Family YMCA for the survivor and their family. The 12 week program introduces muscle groups slowly and helps survivors develop a routine that they can do on their own, without the help of the instructor, by the end of the session to set them up for success. During the 12 week program different disciplines are offered to participants such as indoor cycling, yoga, pilates and other various fitness classes or activities.
The LIVESTRONG at the Northwest Arkansas Mercy YMCA provides an individualized program that helps get breast cancer survivors back to doing the things they loved doing before the cancer set in, but in a group setting.
One participant comments, “I’ve developed a desire for healthy living that will last beyond these 12 weeks.”
